Home to one of the largest conservatories in the country, free to enter and glorious in February, a park with a gold-leafed dome, a Green Line stop named for the plants, and greystone streets that grew up around all of it.
OfficiallyGarfield Park is two community areas: East Garfield Park (27), from the park east to the rail corridor, and West Garfield Park (26), from the park west to Austin’s line. All 77 community areas on one interactive map.
Garfield Park is the middle jewel of the West Side’s boulevard-linked park trio, 184 acres of lagoons and meadows around a fieldhouse whose gilded dome you can spot from the L. Jens Jensen rebuilt the Conservatory on its edge in 1908 as gardens under glass rather than potted rows, and it remains free, city-run, and one of the best two hours in Chicago when the weather turns. East and West Garfield Park, the two community areas around the park, hold greystone and two-flat blocks, Madison Street’s commerce, and institutions working visibly on the neighborhood’s next chapter, the Hatchery’s food-business incubator among them.
The Conservatory’s rooms, palms, ferns, desert, and the show houses, run seasonal exhibitions and a plant sale that empties the city’s trunks; the outdoor gardens and the park’s lagoons carry summer. The Conservatory has its own Green Line stop, which makes it one of the easiest great places in Chicago to reach without a car.
Greystones and brick two-flats face the park and line the boulevards, frame cottages and larger apartment buildings fill the side streets, and prices remain among the most approachable anywhere near the L. For owner-occupants willing to restore, the raw material is real: read our building-reading guide, the older-homes guide, and the investment guide before you tour, and we will connect you with lenders who know renovation loans.
What homes sell for in Garfield Park by type (houses, condos, 2-flats, 3-flats, 4-flats and buildings of 5 units and up), how many are for sale now, rents by bedrooms, cap rates, renting against buying, what is being built, property taxes, the public schools and the CTA. Updated every week.
