Living in North Lawndale: a neighborhood guide

One of the deepest greystone collections in Chicago, a national-register district of them in K-Town, a great Olmsted-tradition park on the boulevard, the remains of the Sears empire that once employed the neighborhood, and the Pink Line running it all downtown.

The lay of the land

North Lawndale grew fast in the early 1900s and built in stone: block after block of greystone two-flats, and in K-Town, the streets whose names start with K between Pulaski and Kostner, an intact run of them recognized as a national historic district. Sears, Roebuck ran its worldwide empire from a campus on Homan and Arthington here for half a century, and its original tower still stands, the centerpiece of a campus reborn with community and arts uses.

Douglass Park, renamed for Anna and Frederick Douglass, anchors the east end with lagoons, a grand fieldhouse and the boulevard link in the West Side park chain. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived in North Lawndale during his 1966 Chicago campaign, a history the neighborhood carries visibly and seriously.

Getting around

Three Pink Line stops put the Loop about twenty minutes away, Ogden Avenue runs its old Route 66 diagonal straight toward downtown, and the Eisenhower’s ramps sit a few blocks north. It is one of the better-connected corners of the West Side.

The housing stock

Greystones above all: two-flats and three-flats with carved stone fronts, many restored, many waiting, plus brick two-flats and frame cottages between them. Local institutions have spent two decades proving these buildings restore beautifully, and for an owner-occupant willing to take one on, the combination of stone construction and Pink Line access is hard to match at the price.
