The west side of the great park: the corner at Madison and Pulaski that was once the busiest shopping district outside the Loop, a 1920 library reborn as a regional anchor with its own artist in residence, and blocks working their way back one building at a time.
West Garfield Park grew as a streetcar neighborhood on the park’s western flank, and its corner of Madison and Pulaski, Madison-Crawford to the old-timers, was for decades the busiest shopping crossroads in Chicago outside the Loop, with movie palaces like the Marbro and the Paradise seating thousands. The palaces are gone and the corridor carries the scars of the disinvestment years in plain view, but the bones, wide Madison, the boulevard link to the park, solid two-flat streets, are all still in place, and community organizations here are among the most determined in the city.
The building that shows what this neighborhood produces when it is invested in is the Legler Regional Library on Crawford, a 1920 landmark that reopened in 2020 as the West Side’s regional library, with collections at research depth, a public artist-in-residence studio and monumental contemporary art on its lawn. The park’s west side belongs to the meadows, the music court and the lagoon’s quieter bank, with the Conservatory a walk across the drives; the joint Garfield Park guide carries the shared park story.
Brick two-flats, greystones and corner buildings on the streets north and south of Madison, frame cottages toward the rail corridor, and prices among the most attainable on any L line in the city, the Green Line at Pulaski runs the Loop in about twelve minutes. Vacancy and condition demand a careful eye and a good inspector, and rehab-minded buyers should read our older-homes guide and investment guide before touring; we will walk any block with you and read each building for what it is.
