Living in Humboldt Park: a neighborhood guide

The lay of the land

The park came first: 207 acres laid out in the 1870s and reshaped by Jens Jensen into his prairie-style masterpiece, with a lagoon, meadows, the 1907 boathouse pavilion, and a formal garden. The neighborhood wraps it on three sides, stitched into the city’s boulevard system by Humboldt, Kedzie, and North Boulevards, all fronted by greystones built to face parkland.

Division Street east of the park is Paseo Boricua, the heart of Puerto Rican Chicago, gateway-marked by two 59-foot steel Puerto Rican flags raised in 1995, with the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture holding the park’s old stables building.

Getting around

The neighborhood is bus country with the Blue Line on its eastern shoulder: California and Western stations serve the blocks nearest the 606, and the #70 Division, #72 North, and #82 Kimball-Homan cover the grid. Drivers use North Avenue and Grand as the fast diagonals.

• The 606’s quiet western trailhead at Ridgeway makes the whole elevated trail a front porch.
• The boulevards themselves are signed bike routes connecting to Logan Square and Garfield Park.

The park itself

Everything a big park should hold: the lagoon and its summer beach cove, fishing piers, the boathouse terrace, wildflower meadows Jensen would recognize, ballfields, and one of the best sunset skyline views in the city from the east meadow. The formal garden at California and Division is the wedding-photo spot; winter brings sledding hills and quiet.

The housing stock

The boulevards carry the trophy greystones, park-facing and generous; the side streets mix two-flats, brick cottages, and frame houses, with lots often wider than the North Side norm. East of the park near the 606 the stock runs newer with rehabs and infill. The calendar

• The Fiestas Puertorriqueñas and the People’s Parade fill the park and Division each June.
