The arch over 26th Street welcomes you to one of the busiest retail corridors in Chicago, two miles of bakeries, taquerias and shops. Around it: brick worker cottages, two-flats, La Villita Park, and the Pink Line along the north edge.
Little Village, La Villita, fills the community area of South Lawndale between the rail corridors, with 26th Street as its main street and the 1990 arch at Albany as its front door. The corridor runs west for roughly two miles and ranks among the busiest retail strips in the city.
Cermak and 31st carry the crosstown traffic, and the neighborhood connects east through Pilsen along the industrial corridor it shares.
The Pink Line runs along the neighborhood’s north edge with stops at California, Kedzie, Central Park and Pulaski, a one-seat ride to the Loop.
La Villita Park, opened in 2014 off 28th and Sacramento, added 21 acres of fields, courts and a skate park to a neighborhood that had long been short on green space. Piotrowski Park on the west end carries the fieldhouse, pools and leagues, and Douglass Park with its lagoons sits just across the northern rail line.
The blocks are Chicago worker housing at its most classic: brick cottages, two-flats and corner storefront buildings from the 1880s through the 1920s, dense, walkable and sturdy. The 26th Street Mexican Independence Day parade each September is one of the largest parades in the city, and the corridor itself is the daily event: panaderias from dawn, taquerias past midnight, and quinceañera shopfronts in between.
