The lay of the land

Garfield Ridge runs along Archer Avenue west of Midway on a low rise that gave it its name, and Clearing lines the airport’s south side, named for the Belt Railway’s vast clearing yard on its own southern edge, still one of the busiest rail classification yards in the country. Both filled in fast after the war, when Midway was the world’s busiest airport, and the housing wears that era proudly: brick, low, and built in runs.

Archer Avenue is the spine, an old diagonal that predates the grid, and the I-55 ramps at Cicero and Central make this one of the easiest corners of the city to drive out of.

Living beside Midway

The airport is the neighborhood’s biggest employer, the reason the Orange Line comes here, and a fact of the sky. Some blocks sit under approach paths and some never notice a plane; the difference is a few streets. Our standing advice: stand on the block for ten minutes on a weekday before you write an offer, and ask us which runways were in use that day.

Parks and the everyday

Wentworth Park’s fieldhouse, pool, and leagues carry Garfield Ridge’s calendar, Vittum Park does the same for the blocks near the yard, and Hale Park serves the south end. Archer and 63rd hold the errands, bakeries, and the kind of taverns that have been pouring for fifty years. The forest preserves along the Des Plaines are a short drive down Archer.

The housing stock

Brick ranches, raised ranches, Georgians and Cape Cods from the 1940s through the 60s, on straight streets with attached or rear garages, plus older bungalows toward the eastern blocks. It is some of the most uniform masonry housing in Chicago, which makes comparisons clean work: condition and mechanicals decide value here more than style does. Bring our house systems guide and brick guide to a tour, and the seasonal checklist shows what upkeep these houses expect.
