Taylor Street’s century-old restaurant row, a university that rebuilt the blocks around it, one of the country’s largest medical districts, and a landmark pocket of Victorian rowhouses that most of the city has never walked.
OfficiallyLittle Italy, University Village and Tri-Taylor are neighborhoods inside the Near West Side, community area 28, with the West Loop, Fulton Market, Greektown and the medical district. All 77 community areas on one interactive map.
Fulton Grace does not have a search page for Tri-Taylor of its own yet, so these open the whole city.
Taylor Street has fed Chicago since the great Italian immigration, and its lemonade stands and red-sauce rooms carry names that go back generations. The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum on Halsted preserves the settlement house that changed American social work, now inside UIC’s campus. University Village rose on the old Maxwell Street Market land south of Roosevelt, townhomes and row buildings around a retail spine, and Tri-Taylor, the wedge between Ogden, the hospitals and the rail embankment, keeps intact 1880s Victorian rows on angled streets, a City landmark district.
The Illinois Medical District fills the west end: four hospitals, two universities of health sciences, and tens of thousands of daily commuters.
Students, residents and fellows on hospital schedules, faculty, and anyone who wants downtown twelve minutes away without downtown pricing. The blocks are calm for how central they are, the Blue Line runs all night, and Taylor Street means you never cook unless you feel like it.
Brick rowhouses and two-flats on the old blocks, the University Village townhome courts, condo mid-rises along Roosevelt and Halsted, and Tri-Taylor’s landmark Victorians, some of the best-preserved 1880s streetscape in Chicago. Investors like the rental depth the hospitals guarantee; owner-occupants like that the vintage stock is brick and inspectable. Our building-reading guide and investment guide both earn their keep here.
