Living in Uptown: a neighborhood guide

The lay of the land

Uptown runs from Montrose (4400 north) to Foster (5200 north), between the lake and Ravenswood. Broadway and Lawrence meet at its heart, where the 1920s built an entertainment district that is still the neighborhood’s calling card. Smaller districts sit inside it: Buena Park to the south, Sheridan Park in the middle, and the Argyle Street strip, known for its Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants and its summer night market.

Getting around

The Red Line is the spine, with stations at Wilson, rebuilt top to bottom in 2017, Lawrence, and Argyle, renewed under the CTA’s modernization of the line. Purple Line express trains also stop at Wilson on weekdays.

• CTA buses on the main streets: the #36 Broadway, #78 Montrose, #81 Lawrence, and #151 Sheridan.
• DuSable Lake Shore Drive begins its northern stretch here, with ramps at Montrose, Wilson, and Foster.
• The Lakefront Trail runs the whole shoreline edge of the neighborhood.

Parks and green space

Montrose is one of the best stretches of the entire lakefront: the city’s biggest beach, a harbor full of sailboats, Cricket Hill for kites and sledding, and Montrose Point, whose famous Magic Hedge is one of the top spots in the Midwest to watch migrating birds. Clarendon Park adds fields and a fieldhouse a few blocks in.

The housing stock

Uptown’s boom years left it with grand vintage stock: big courtyard condo buildings, hotel conversions, and two landmark districts worth a detour. The Hutchinson Street District holds Prairie School mansions, several by George W. Maher, and the Sheridan Park district is lined with greystones and two-flats. Culture and the calendar

• This is the best live-music block in the city: the Aragon, the Riviera, and the Green Mill, with the restored Uptown Theatre still waiting in the wings.
• TimeLine Theatre opened its new home on Broadway in 2026, a purpose-built 250-seat house.
• The Argyle Night Market fills the street on summer Thursday evenings.
• Montrose Beach carries the summer calendar, from volleyball leagues to the bird migration in May and September.
