The lay of the land

Rogers Park runs from Devon north to the Evanston line at Juneway, and from the lake west to Ridge. Its signature is how it meets the water: instead of one long park, the east-west streets end in small public beaches, Jarvis, Fargo, Howard and the rest, so the lake feels like part of the street grid rather than a destination. Sheridan Road threads the eastern edge past Loyola University’s lakefront campus, and Clark Street carries the commercial life on the west side of the neighborhood.

Howard Street is the northern seam, shared with Evanston, and the Howard station makes it one of the few corners of the city where three CTA lines meet.

Getting around

Few neighborhoods are this well hung on the Red Line: Jarvis, Morse, and Loyola stops sit inside the neighborhood, and Howard anchors the top with Red, Purple, and Yellow line service, express trains to Evanston and the Skokie Swift included. The Metra UP-North line stops at Rogers Park station near Ravenswood and Lunt for a fast ride to Ogilvie.

• The #147 and #151 buses run the Outer and Inner Drive routes downtown; the #22 Clark runs local.
• Sheridan Road connects south to DuSable Lake Shore Drive at Hollywood.
• By bike, the Lakefront Trail begins a short ride south, and Glenwood is a quiet signed route.

Parks, beaches, and the arts district

Loyola Park is the big green, running along the sand from Touhy to Pratt with a fieldhouse, and Leone Beach at its north end is one of the larger public beaches in the city. The painted seawall at Loyola Park gets repainted every June during Artists of the Wall, a tradition running since 1993. Under and alongside the Morse L stop, the brick-paved Glenwood Avenue arts district holds galleries, studios, murals on the embankment, and the long-running Lifeline Theatre.

The housing stock

Rogers Park is the city’s great courtyard-building neighborhood: U-shaped brick apartment buildings from the 1910s and 20s fill the blocks east of Clark, many converted to condominiums, which keeps entry prices among the gentlest on the North Side lakefront.
