One of Chicago’s great neighborhoods for walking: 18th Street’s restaurants and bakeries, murals on seemingly every wall, an 1892 opera-house-styled music hall, and some of the oldest housing stock in the city, all on the Pink Line two stops from the Loop side.
Pilsen sits on the Lower West Side between 16th Street and the river, from Halsted west to Western. 18th Street is the spine, carrying the restaurants, bakeries, galleries, and shops. The neighborhood was settled and named by Czech immigrants after the city of Plzen, and over the twentieth century it became a center of Mexican-American culture in Chicago; the murals and institutions tell both chapters of that story.
The Pink Line runs along the north edge with stations at 18th and Damen; the 18th Street station is itself covered in murals and worth the stop on its own. The Loop is about fifteen minutes away.
Harrison Park is the neighborhood’s green center, with ball fields, a pool, and the National Museum of Mexican Art on its edge. Dvorak Park, named in the Czech years, adds a fieldhouse and pool near the east end, and the riverfront to the south is slowly opening up with each round of city planning.
Pilsen holds some of the oldest housing in Chicago, including frame workers cottages that predate the Great Fire and brick two- and three-flats from the 1880s and 1890s. A famous local quirk: many cottages sit below sidewalk level, a leftover from when the city raised its street grades in the 1800s.
