Quiet brick streets between the river and Ravenswood, a small-town shopping strip on Roscoe, and a riverfront that once held Riverview, the largest amusement park in the world, and now holds boathouses and trails.
North Center sits between the Chicago River and Ravenswood Avenue from Diversey to Montrose, with Lincoln and Damen as its crossroads. Roscoe Village is its southern pocket, a compact strip of shops and restaurants along Roscoe Street that calls itself the village within the city. The St. Ben’s blocks around St. Benedict parish fill the middle with some of the tidiest brick streets on the North Side.
The neighborhood’s great ghost story is Riverview: from 1904 to 1967 the riverbank at Belmont and Western held the world’s largest amusement park, seventy rides including the Bobs. The site is now offices, a police headquarters, and parkland, and neighbors still trade Riverview stories.
The Brown Line runs the eastern edge with stops at Irving Park, Addison, and Paulina, an easy ride around the elbow to the Loop. Damen, Western, and Addison carry the buses.
The riverfront is the story here. The WMS Boathouse at Clark Park, a Studio Gang design from 2013, rents kayaks and hosts rowing crews on the calmest stretch of the river; Horner Park across Montrose is one of the North Side’s largest inland parks; and Hamlin Park in Roscoe Village runs one of the city’s oldest neighborhood pools and a strong theater program in its fieldhouse.
Brick two-flats and workers cottages set the base, with a strong run of single-family rebuilds and new construction on the St. Ben’s blocks, and frame cottages with deep porches in Roscoe Village.
