Mount Greenwood grew up around the cemeteries that ring it, a tavern-and-florist crossroads serving funeral processions in the 1880s, and was among the last territory annexed into Chicago. Its identity has been steady for generations: city workers whose residency rules keep them in Chicago choose the farthest, calmest corner the map allows, and the result is block after block of owner-kept brick with flags on the porches and leagues filled by the same surnames for decades.
Alsip, Merrionette Park and Evergreen Park sit directly across the line, and the Beverly and Morgan Park ridge is a five-minute drive east.
The Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences works roughly 72 acres at 111th and Pulaski, real fields, greenhouses, livestock barns and beehives inside the city limits, the last working farmland in Chicago and one of the country’s premier agricultural magnet schools. Neighbors know it for the seasonal farm stand, the student-raised produce and the surreal pleasure of passing a tractor on the way to the grocery store. St. Xavier University’s campus at 103rd adds a second anchor institution a mile north.
The 111th Street strip between Pulaski and Kedzie carries the pubs, breakfast rooms, delis and shops, still stubbornly local, and Mount Greenwood Park’s fieldhouse, pool and ballfields run one of the busiest league calendars in the city. Commutes lean on the Rock Island’s Morgan Park and Beverly stops just east, the buses on 111th, and I-294 minutes away at 127th; downtown is a real commute, which is exactly the trade the neighborhood chose.
Brick Georgians and Cape Cods by the hundred, post-war ranches and raised ranches, and a scattering of newer rebuilds on wider lots. Houses trade briskly and often quietly, with buyers who grew up here waiting for a block they already know; walk-to-park and walk-to-strip blocks carry the premium.
