Schools and addresses

Schools in Chicagoland: which high school an address goes to

In Illinois a home’s address decides its public schools, and the lines rarely follow town borders. Here is how Chicago and ten suburban high school districts sort it out, where to check any address with the district itself, and a Fulton Grace search for the homes inside each high school’s area.

Check an address first

Boundaries change, and a listing’s school is entered with the listing, so treat it as a starting point. For a Chicago address, the CPS School Locator names its neighborhood schools. For a suburb, each district below links its own boundary map or address lookup. Weighing a few addresses? Send them to us: we will check each one against the district’s lookup and pull the property tax bill too.

Chicago Public Schools (District 299)

One district covers the whole city, with three ways into high school:

GoCPS for fall 2027 (one application for the choice and selective programs): opened Wednesday, Sept 9, 2026; closes Friday, Nov 13, 2026, at 5 p.m.; first offers Friday, Feb 12, 2027.

Searching Chicago homes: each of our 77 neighborhood guides has a Fulton Grace search, and on fultongrace.com you can type a school’s name into the search box to see the homes in its area.

How the suburbs work

Many suburbs split public schools in two: elementary districts run kindergarten through 8th grade and send their students on to a separate high school district. A few are unit districts that run kindergarten through 12th grade, like Naperville 203. Either way the address decides, and one town can sit in more than one district: parts of Darien, Oak Brook and Westmont, for one, are in District 99 and parts in Hinsdale 86.

Each district’s facts below come from its own website, read Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Student counts are the districts’ own figures, and their years vary; the Illinois Report Card has the state’s counts. The Fulton Grace buttons search the homes inside each high school’s area, for sale or for rent.

Questions people ask

Does the school on a listing guarantee a spot?

No. A listing’s school is entered with the listing, and boundaries change. The district decides by address, so check its own lookup (each district above links it) before counting on a school.

Do renters go to the same schools as owners?

Yes. Districts enroll by where a student lives, whether the home is owned or rented. Each district lists the proof of residency it asks for, and a lease is usually part of it.

Can a Chicago student go to a high school outside their neighborhood?

Yes, through GoCPS: the selective enrollment high schools and the choice programs. The neighborhood high school stays guaranteed either way.

Why do two school districts show up on a suburban tax bill?

In much of Chicagoland an elementary district and a high school district each levy property taxes, so a home’s bill lists both. A unit district, like Naperville 203, is one line.

How do I search homes by school on Fulton Grace?

Use the buttons on this page, or type a school’s name into the search box on fultongrace.com and pick it from the list; the results are the homes in that school’s area, for sale or for rent.

Weighing addresses near a school boundary?

Send us the addresses. We will check each one against the district’s own lookup, pull the property tax bill, and set up a Fulton Grace search for the area so new homes reach you first.
