The old meatpacking and produce blocks west of the river, remade into Restaurant Row, timber lofts, and glass towers, while Metra’s two great terminals and three L stops keep it the easiest commute in the city.
The West Loop runs from the river west toward Ashland between Grand and the Eisenhower. For a century it fed the city: Fulton Market was wholesale meat and produce, Randolph Street was Haymarket, and the brick loft buildings still wear painted ghost signs. The market trade moved on, the lofts filled with studios and then homes, and Randolph became Restaurant Row, one of the best-known eating streets in the country. Fulton Market’s northern blocks now hold corporate headquarters, McDonald’s moved its global home here in 2018, alongside hotels and galleries.
History sits underfoot: the Haymarket memorial on Desplaines marks the 1886 rally that gave the world May Day, and Old St. Patrick’s at Adams and Desplaines, from 1856, survived the Great Fire and is among the oldest buildings in Chicago.
No neighborhood out-commutes this one. The Green and Pink lines stop at Morgan, at Ashland, and since 2024 at the new Damen station by the United Center; the Blue Line runs the south edge at UIC-Halsted; and Union Station and Ogilvie, the two Metra terminals, are a walk across the river, which puts every suburb and Amtrak on foot.
Mary Bartelme Park’s tilted steel gates at Monroe and Sangamon are the neighborhood’s postcard, with a serious dog run; Skinner Park covers ballfields and tennis behind the classical Skinner school building; and Union Park at Ashland hosts the big summer music festivals. The lawns of the two river terminals’ plazas fill at lunch on warm days.
Three distinct products: authentic timber-loft condos in the converted market buildings, heavy beams, brick walls, twelve-foot ceilings; new glass condo and apartment towers, thickest near Fulton Market; and, easy to miss, the Victorian rowhouses of the Jackson Boulevard historic district near Ashland.
