The biggest community area on the map and one of the least known: a residential pocket or two wrapped in marsh, lake and old steel land, with the city’s boldest new park built on the industrial leftovers.
South Deering covers more ground than any other Chicago community area, and most of it is not streets: Lake Calumet, its marshes, and the vast lands where Wisconsin Steel and its neighbors once employed tens of thousands. The people live mostly in two pockets, the blocks around Trumbull Park near 105th and Yates, and Jeffery Manor, a late-1940s development of curving streets and brick rows that feels lifted from a postwar picture book.
The steel history runs deep and serious here: the 1937 Memorial Day tragedy at Republic Steel, a landmark moment in American labor history, happened at this corner of the city, and Trumbull Park’s homes were the site of a hard chapter in the 1950s struggle over open housing. The neighborhood carries both stories openly, which is its own kind of strength.
Big Marsh Park is the headline: 278 acres of former industrial marsh reborn as an eco-recreation park, with a built bike park of jumps and pump tracks, hiking trails, and ponds where herons and migrating ducks have voted on the restoration with their feet. The Ford Calumet Environmental Center at its gate explains the whole Calumet region’s comeback. Between Big Marsh, Lake Calumet’s edges and the forest preserves south, this is the greenest square mileage in Chicago that almost nobody has pedaled. And where 95th Street lifts over the Calumet River at the neighborhood’s north tip, the little smokehouse at Calumet Fisheries has been hand-smoking fish over oak since 1948, a James Beard America’s Classic that survived a fire, reopened to lines out the door, and is worth the drive on its own.
