The neighborhood that shares its name with the city’s largest park, running from North Avenue to Diversey between the lake and the river. Rowhouse streets, the free zoo, the Armitage shopping blocks, and DePaul’s campus all inside a short walk.
Lincoln Park runs from North Avenue (1600 north) to Diversey (2800 north), and from the lakefront park it is named for west to the river. Armitage and Halsted carry the boutique shopping, Lincoln Avenue cuts through on the diagonal with restaurants and the old Biograph Theater, and DePaul University’s campus anchors the middle. The Old Town Triangle’s lanes tuck into the southeast corner.
The Brown and Purple Lines stop at Armitage, Fullerton, and Diversey, and the Red Line runs beneath at North/Clybourn and Fullerton, so most of the neighborhood is inside a ten-minute walk of a train.
Lincoln Park itself is the city’s largest park, and its stretch here holds the Lincoln Park Zoo, free every day of the year, the glass-domed Conservatory, also free, the North Pond Nature Sanctuary, and the boardwalk around South Pond. The Chicago History Museum sits at the park’s southern gateway at Clark and North, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum by North Pond, and Oz Park, with its Wizard of Oz statues, fills a full block inland by DePaul.
This is one of Chicago’s showcase collections of Victorian rowhouses, greystones, and brick singles, much of it built in the decades after the Great Fire, alongside vintage co-ops facing the park and newer condo buildings west of Halsted. The Mid-North District and the Old Town Triangle carry landmark protection. Toward the river, the former industrial stretch has long-term redevelopment plans still taking shape.
