Living in Hyde Park and Kenwood: a neighborhood guide

The lay of the land

Hyde Park and Kenwood sit along the lakefront on the South Side, wrapped around the University of Chicago and set between two of the city’s great parks. Jackson Park runs along the lake to the east and south, Washington Park lies to the west, and the mile-long Midway Plaisance connects the two right through the middle by the university.

Kenwood is the quieter stretch of large houses to the north; Hyde Park is the busier university side to the south, with the 53rd and 57th Street corridors carrying the commercial life.

Getting around

Metra’s Electric District line is the fast way downtown, with stops at 47th/Kenwood, 51st/53rd, 55th-56th-57th, and 59th/University of Chicago. No CTA ‘L’ train runs through Hyde Park itself; the nearest Green Line stations are to the west.

• CTA buses tie the neighborhood together and run downtown: the #6 Jackson Park Express, #2 Hyde Park Express, #28 Stony Island, #55 Garfield, and the #171 and #172 routes serving the University of Chicago.
• DuSable Lake Shore Drive runs along the lakefront for the drive north to the Loop.

Parks and green space

This is a neighborhood built between parks. Jackson Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, hosted the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and now holds the Obama Presidential Center, which opened to the public in June 2026. Washington Park sits to the west, the Midway Plaisance connects the two, and the lakefront gives you Promontory Point at 55th Street and the 57th Street Beach.

The housing stock

The stock is some of the oldest and best preserved in Chicago. Kenwood holds blocks of large historic mansions in a Chicago Landmark district; Hyde Park mixes vintage courtyard apartment buildings and greystones with university housing. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, a Prairie School landmark completed in 1910 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands on Woodlawn, and the Museum of Science and Industry occupies the one 1893 fair building still standing on its Jackson Park site.

• The Hyde Park Jazz Festival fills the neighborhood in September, free.
