Living in Burnside: a neighborhood guide

The Triangle: Chicago’s least-populated community area, drawn by three converging rail lines and named for the Civil War general whose magnificent whiskers gave the word sideburns to the language. Inside the tracks, a few calm brick streets that feel like a secret.

The lay of the land

Burnside is the answer to a trivia question: the smallest of Chicago’s 77 community areas by population, a true triangle penned in by the converging embankments of three rail lines southeast of 91st and Cottage Grove. The name honors Ambrose Burnside, the Union general and Illinois Central railroad man whose spectacular face-whiskers gave American English the word sideburns. Railroaders settled the Triangle; their brick bungalows and Georgians are still what it holds.

Like Hermosa on the Northwest Side, the isolation is the identity: through traffic has no reason to enter, so the streets inside stay quiet in a way few city blocks manage.

The everyday

Daily life leans on the neighborhoods around it: Chatham’s corridors and the 95th Street strip are minutes away, the Red Line’s 95th terminal and the Metra Electric’s 91st and 95th Street stations bracket the Triangle, and the Skyway and Ryan are both close for drivers. Inside, it is porches, block clubs and long tenure.

The housing stock

Brick bungalows, Georgians and a run of frame cottages, nearly all owner-kept, on a handful of streets that rarely list. When something does come up it tends to be solid and fairly priced; bring our brick guide and seasonal checklist and move quickly, because small neighborhoods have long memories and short market windows.
