Living in Bronzeville: a neighborhood guide

The lay of the land

Bronzeville spreads across the Douglas and Grand Boulevard community areas, roughly 26th to 51st Street between the Dan Ryan and the lake, with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, part of the historic boulevard system, running down its center. During the Great Migration this was the center of Black business, music, and letters in America, the district called the Black Metropolis, and the landmarks of that era still line the streets.

The Illinois Institute of Technology’s campus, with Mies van der Rohe’s landmark S.R. Crown Hall, sits along the western edge, and Hyde Park and Kenwood begin to the south; our Hyde Park guide picks up there.

Getting around

The Green Line runs through with stations at 35th-Bronzeville-IIT, 43rd, 47th, and 51st, the Red Line stops at Sox-35th across the Dan Ryan, and the Metra Electric line runs along the lakefront edge, so the Loop is minutes away by three different rails.

• CTA buses on the main streets: the #3 King Drive, #4 Cottage Grove, #29 State, and #35 35th.
• DuSable Lake Shore Drive has ramps at 31st and 47th for the quick drive north.
• The Lakefront Trail runs the full length of the neighborhood’s shoreline through Burnham Park.

Parks and green space

The lakefront here is Burnham Park: 31st Street Beach and its harbor, playgrounds, and the trail running north to the Loop and south toward Hyde Park. Inland, the King Drive boulevards are the neighborhood’s historic front yard, with Ellis Park and Mandrake Park filling in the blocks between.

The housing stock

Bronzeville holds one of the deepest collections of greystones in Chicago, rows of them along King Drive and the side streets, alongside brick rowhouses, two-flats, and a steady run of new townhome and condo construction filling the once-empty lots. The home of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, a National Historic Landmark, stands on King Drive; the Black Metropolis landmarks, from the Supreme Life Building to the Chicago Bee Building, now a library branch, to the Eighth Regiment Armory, the first in the country built for a Black regiment, anchor 35th Street. Culture and the calendar

• The Bud Billiken Parade, the oldest and largest African American parade in the country, has run down King Drive every August since 1929.
• The Forum, an 1890s assembly hall on 43rd Street where the neighborhood danced for a century, has been restored and hosts music and events again, and new restaurants and wine bars keep opening along 43rd, 47th, and Cottage Grove.
• The building that held the Sunset Cafe, where Louis Armstrong played in the 1920s, still stands on 35th Street, and Rube Foster, founder of the Negro National League, ran his Chicago American Giants from here.
• White Sox games are a short walk across the Dan Ryan Expressway at 35th.
